Memberful review: when $25 a month beats a 10% fee

Memberful puts memberships on a website you already own, and it charges twice: a monthly fee and a cut of every transaction. Our check of memberful.com on 13 June 2026 recorded Starter free with a 10% fee, Pro at $25 a month with 4.9% and Premium at $100 a month with 4.9%. That evidence is four months old.

The short answer

Buy Memberful Buy Memberful Pro if you already have a website and your membership revenue is past the point where a 10% cut costs more than a monthly fee. Our 13 June 2026 check of memberful.com/pricing put Pro at $25 a month with a 4.9% transaction fee, against Starter which is free but takes 10%.

Skip it if you have no site to embed memberships into. Memberful supplies the subscription machinery, not the page your members land on, so without a website of your own you are buying half a product.

Where Memberful fits

Memberful fits the creator who already has a website and wants paid membership to feel like part of it rather than a link away from it. Sign-up, billing and member management are embedded in your own pages and run on your own domain, with a WordPress plugin for the common case and direct integrations with Kit, Mailchimp and Discord.

Pricing runs on two meters at once, which is the detail that decides everything else. Our 13 June 2026 check recorded three tiers: Starter free with a 10% transaction fee, Pro at $25 a month with a 4.9% transaction fee, and Premium at $100 a month also at 4.9%. Stripe processes the payments on all three, at approximately 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction according to our snapshot, which is an approximate figure and charged on top of Memberful's own cut.

The crossover between Starter and Pro is the most useful arithmetic on this page. Starter takes 10% and Pro takes 4.9%, a gap of 5.1 percentage points. Pro costs $25 a month, so the fee saving covers the subscription when 5.1% of your revenue equals $25, which is $25 divided by 0.051, or about $490 a month. Below roughly $490 a month, Starter is cheaper. Above it, Pro is, and the gap widens from there.

Worked at a real number, take $2,000 a month of membership revenue. On Starter, 10% is $200. On Pro, the fee is 4.9% of $2,000, which is $98, plus the $25 subscription, so $123 in total. On Premium, the same $98 sits on top of a $100 subscription, so $198. Stripe's charge applies to all three cases on top of those figures.

Pro against Premium is a different kind of decision, because the percentage does not change. Both take 4.9% on our check, so there is no revenue level at which Premium becomes cheaper on fees. The extra $75 a month, which is $900 across a year, buys unlimited members, team accounts and priority support. Judge it on whether you need those, not on the arithmetic.

Annual billing is the only discount recorded in our snapshot. Pro was $250 a year billed annually against $300 paid monthly, a saving of $50, and Premium was $1,000 a year against $1,200 paid monthly, a saving of $200. Both prepay the full term, which is a meaningful commitment for a membership business whose revenue is still proving itself.

All of this was verified on 13 June 2026 and has not been re-checked since, which makes it four months old at the time of this review. Transaction percentages tend to be stickier than subscription prices, but a tier can be renamed and a free plan's rate can change inside four months. Confirm the current rates before you plan around the crossover, and see the fan monetization platforms category for the alternatives.

Memberful pricing

Memberful charges a monthly fee and a percentage of each transaction, so neither number alone tells you the cost. The figures below come from our check of memberful.com/pricing on 13 June 2026, four months old and not re-verified since. Stripe's processing, recorded in our snapshot as approximately 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction, is charged on top of every tier.

Memberful list prices as recorded on 13 June 2026. Every tier carries a transaction percentage as well as its monthly fee, and Stripe's approximate 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction sits on top of all three. This check is four months old.
PlanPriceWhat it adds
StarterFree10% transaction fee, plus Stripe processing
Pro$25/month4.9% transaction fee plus Stripe. $250 a year billed annually
Premium$100/month4.9% transaction fee plus Stripe. $1,000 a year billed annually. Adds unlimited members, team accounts and priority support

Two meters run at once, a subscription and a percentage, so the cheapest tier depends on your revenue rather than on your feature list. Four things set the bill:

  1. Monthly membership revenue, because the percentage applies to it. At $2,000 a month, 4.9% is $98 and 10% is $200.
  2. Which tier you sit on. Starter is free with 10%, Pro is $25 a month with 4.9%, and Premium is $100 a month with the same 4.9%.
  3. The Starter to Pro crossover, which our own arithmetic puts at about $490 a month of revenue: $25 divided by the 5.1 percentage point gap between the two rates.
  4. Stripe, charged per transaction on top of everything above and recorded in our snapshot only as approximately 2.9% plus $0.30. The more members you bill, the more the fixed part of that matters.

Memberful's fees against the alternatives

Buy Me a Coffee takes a flat 5% of all transactions with no monthly fee at all, verified 15 June 2026, and that is the comparison which matters most. Against Memberful Pro at $25 a month plus 4.9%, the difference in percentages is a tenth of a point, so Pro only overtakes a flat 5% when that tenth covers the subscription, which lands around $25,000 of monthly revenue. Below that, the flat-percentage platform is cheaper, and what Memberful is selling you is placement on your own site rather than a lower cut. Patreon was on a single 10% platform fee when we checked it on 10 June 2026, the same rate as Memberful Starter, with no subscription to pay.

Memberful billing terms worth knowing

The thing to hold on to is that there are two Memberful charges on every plan, a monthly fee and a percentage, and Stripe adds a third on top.

Starter
Free each month, 10% transaction fee, plus Stripe processing.
Pro
$25 a month, or $250 a year billed annually. 4.9% transaction fee plus Stripe.
Premium
$100 a month, or $1,000 a year billed annually. 4.9% transaction fee plus Stripe.
Annual saving
$50 across a year on Pro ($300 paid monthly against $250), and $200 on Premium ($1,200 against $1,000).
Starter to Pro crossover
About $490 a month of revenue, from $25 divided by the 5.1 point gap between 10% and 4.9%. Our arithmetic, not a published figure.
Pro to Premium
No fee crossover exists: both take 4.9%. The extra $75 a month, $900 a year, buys features only.

Memberful has three plans. Starter is free with a 10% transaction fee. Pro costs $25/month with a 4.9% transaction fee. Premium costs $100/month with a 4.9% transaction fee. All plans use Stripe for payment processing (approximately 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on top of Memberful's cut). Premium adds unlimited members, team accounts, and priority support versus Pro.

There is no single Memberful price to quote, because the tier you choose and the revenue you push through it both move the bill. The crossover figures on this page are our own arithmetic from the rates in our 13 June 2026 snapshot rather than numbers Memberful publishes, and the Stripe component in that snapshot is approximate. Our creator tool cost calculators will run your own revenue against all three tiers once you have today's rates.

What Memberful gives up

You need a website first, and that is not a detail. Memberful handles sign-up, billing and member records; it does not give you a page for members to arrive at, so a creator without a site has to build one before any of this is usable.

Starter's 10% is the costliest rate in this part of the market and the free tier is where people linger too long. At $2,000 a month of revenue, Starter's $200 fee against Pro's $123 means the free plan costs $77 a month more than the paid one, which is the opposite of how a free tier is supposed to work.

There is no content delivery built in. Member-only posts, downloads and video have to be served by your own site, with Memberful deciding who is allowed to see them, so part of the work a hosted platform would do falls to you.

Stripe's cut is charged on top of every tier and it is outside Memberful's control. Our snapshot records it only as approximately 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction, so no total on this page is exact, and the fixed component matters more the more small subscriptions you bill.

Nobody discovers you through Memberful, by design. A white-label platform has no audience of its own to lend you, where Buy Me a Coffee at a flat 5% of all transactions and no monthly fee, verified 15 June 2026, at least hands you a ready-made supporter page to point people at.

Support and documentation are the weak spot outside the common setup. The WordPress path is well worn; a custom site or an unusual stack can mean slower answers and gaps in the written guidance, which is a cost paid in your time rather than on the invoice.

The pricing evidence here is from 13 June 2026 and is the oldest part of this review. Four months is long enough for a transaction percentage or an annual rate to change, and a crossover calculated from stale rates is a stale crossover, which is why the arithmetic is shown rather than only the answer.

How Memberful compares

The three platforms below are the ones weighed against Memberful, and the axis is owning the member relationship against being handed an audience and a page. Prices are each vendor's published rates with the date we checked them, and those dates differ, so compare with that in mind. The wider field sits in the fan monetization platforms category.

How to choose a Memberful tier without guessing

Starter is free and carries a 10% transaction fee, so you can run real money through Memberful before paying a subscription. Our rates are from 13 June 2026 and four months old, so check them before you decide.

  1. Confirm the three current rates on memberful.com/pricing. Every number on this page rests on a 13 June 2026 check and the whole crossover argument falls apart if the percentages have moved.
  2. Check that your site can take the embed before anything else. WordPress is the well-trodden path; anything else is worth testing on a staging site first.
  3. Start on Starter and take real payments. A 10% fee on a small amount of revenue is cheaper than $25 a month, and it tells you whether members will sign up at all.
  4. Track your monthly membership revenue against the crossover. Our arithmetic puts Starter and Pro level at about $490 a month, from $25 divided by the 5.1 point gap between 10% and 4.9%.
  5. When you cross it, move. At $2,000 a month, Pro costs $123 against Starter's $200, so staying free is the expensive option.
  6. Treat Premium as a features decision, not a pricing one. Both paid tiers take 4.9%, so the extra $75 a month is buying unlimited members, team accounts and priority support and nothing else.
  7. Price the alternative honestly before committing to a subscription. Buy Me a Coffee takes a flat 5% with no monthly fee, verified 15 June 2026, and the cost calculators will run your own revenue against both once you have current rates.

Memberful questions buyers ask

How much does Memberful cost?

Memberful has three plans. Starter is free with a 10% transaction fee. Pro is $25/month with a 4.9% transaction fee. Premium is $100/month with a 4.9% transaction fee and additional features including team accounts. All plans also incur Stripe payment processing fees (approximately 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction). At $1,000/month in membership revenue, Pro costs $49 in transaction fees + $25/month = $74/month total, versus Starter's $100/month in transaction fees alone.

Is Memberful owned by Patreon?

Yes. Patreon acquired Memberful in 2018. However, Memberful has continued to operate independently with its own product roadmap, pricing structure, and brand. In practice through 2026, the acquisition has not resulted in Memberful data being shared with Patreon's platform or the product being absorbed into Patreon's offering. It remains a distinct and independently-operated membership tool.

Memberful vs Patreon: which is better?

Memberful is better if you have an existing website and want memberships on your own domain with your branding throughout. Patreon is better if you want a standalone membership page, built-in content delivery features, and audience discovery. On fees: Patreon has no monthly subscription and takes 10% of earnings from creators who started after August 2025, verified 10 June 2026, while Memberful Pro is $25 a month plus a 4.9% transaction fee. The two cost the same at roughly $490 of monthly membership revenue, which is the $25 subscription divided by the 5.1 point gap between the two fees. Below that Patreon is cheaper, and above it Memberful is. Choose Memberful if brand control is a priority; choose Patreon if you want no fixed monthly cost.

Do I need WordPress to use Memberful?

No, but WordPress provides the richest integration experience. Memberful works with any website that can embed an HTML/JavaScript sign-up button: including Webflow, Squarespace, custom-built sites, and static sites. However, the content gating (showing different content to members vs. non-members on the same page) works most smoothly on WordPress through the Memberful plugin. On other platforms, you typically gate content by creating separate member-only pages rather than conditionally showing/hiding content on a shared page.

Does Memberful integrate with ConvertKit (Kit)?

Yes. Memberful has a native integration with Kit (formerly ConvertKit) that automatically adds new members to your Kit account and tags them by membership plan. This means you can segment your email communications by tier: sending different content, offers, or onboarding sequences to different membership levels. The integration syncs both ways: when a member upgrades, downgrades, or cancels, their Kit tags update automatically.

What happens if I want to migrate away from Memberful?

Memberful allows you to export your member data including email addresses, subscription status, and billing history. Since your members subscribed through your website and your domain, the brand transition to a new membership system is smoother than migrating from Patreon, where members associate the membership with the Patreon brand. The most complex part of migration is maintaining existing members are smoothly transferred to the new billing system. Memberful's support team can assist with this process.

Is Memberful good for podcasters?

Yes, Memberful is a strong fit for podcasters with existing podcast websites. The WordPress integration lets you gate bonus episode pages, show notes with premium content, or entire episode archives for paying members. Combined with the Kit integration for listener email sequences and Discord integration for listener community, Memberful provides the core infrastructure for a podcast membership without requiring a separate tool for each component. Supercast and Supporting Cast are Memberful's podcast-specific alternatives if a dedicated private podcast feed is the primary perk.

How does Memberful handle failed payments?

Memberful Pro and Premium include automated dunning management: a built-in retry sequence that attempts to recover failed subscription payments before canceling the membership. When a payment fails, Memberful automatically emails the member and retries the card on Stripe's retry schedule. Members can update their payment details through a self-service billing portal. The pause subscription option (Pro and Premium) lets members temporarily pause rather than cancel when facing financial issues. We publish no recovery rate for it, because the figure in circulation came from the vendor with no source attached.
