Patreon Community fits the creator whose paying audience is already on Patreon. Chat, direct messages and video hosting now sit next to the membership tiers, so the community lives where the money is rather than behind a second login the members have to be persuaded to use.
The pricing model is a percentage of revenue and nothing else. Our check of patreon.com on 10 June 2026 recorded a single 10% platform fee for creators who published their page after August 4, 2025, which replaced the older Pro and Premium tiers. Payment processing fees are charged per transaction on top of that, and our snapshot does not record their size.
The legacy split is the detail that confuses people, and our snapshot records it precisely. Creators who published before August 2025 may still be on the old tiers: Legacy Pro at 8% of earnings and Legacy Premium at 12% of earnings. If your page predates that change, check which of the three rates your account is on rather than assuming the 10% figure applies.
The arithmetic is easy to do and worth doing at your own number. A creator earning $1,000 a month in patron pledges pays $100 a month on the standard 10% rate, which is $1,200 across a year. On the Legacy Pro rate of 8% the same $1,000 a month costs $80, and on Legacy Premium at 12% it costs $120, so the gap between the two legacy rates is $40 a month, which is $480 across a year at that level of earnings.
That is also where the comparison with a subscription platform becomes concrete. At 10%, the fee matches Circle's $89 a month Professional plan, verified 1 October 2026, at $890 a month in earnings, and it matches Skool's $99 a month Pro plan, verified on the same date, at $990 a month in earnings. Above those points a fixed subscription is the cheaper way to host a community, and below them Patreon is.
What that sum does not capture is that Patreon is also the payment processor, the discovery surface and the membership manager. Moving a community to Circle at $89 a month on Professional, verified 1 October 2026, does not move the pledges, so the comparison is only fair if you are willing to run the memberships somewhere else too.
Our Patreon pricing was last verified on 10 June 2026, four months before this review, and the siblings quoted here carry October dates. Patreon charges a percentage of earnings and no subscription. The figures below come from our check of patreon.com on 10 June 2026 and have not been re-verified in the four months since, so confirm which rate your account is on before planning around it.

There is no subscription here, so the bill is a function of your earnings. Four things set it:

- Payment processing fees, charged per transaction on top of the platform fee. Our snapshot confirms they apply without recording the rate, so this page states no figure for them.
- Your pledge mix, because processing is charged per transaction. A hundred members at a low tier and ten members at a high tier produce the same revenue and a different processing bill.
Patreon Community pricing against the community platforms
Patreon is the only platform in this category where the bill starts at nothing and grows with success. Circle was $89 a month on Professional and $199 on Business when verified on 1 October 2026, and Skool was $9 a month on Hobby and $99 on Pro on the same date. Mighty Networks was $79 a month on Launch, also 1 October 2026, and charges transaction fees on paid sales as well. Discord was free at the base tier with Nitro at $9.99 a month, verified 1 October 2026, and takes nothing from memberships because it does not handle them. Those October dates are fresher than Patreon's June one.

What Patreon Community gives up
The fee grows without limit while a subscription does not, and that is the structural cost of starting free. At the standard 10% rate, earnings of $1,000 a month cost $100 a month and $1,200 across a year, and a creator ten times that size pays ten times as much for the same software.
The community tools lag behind the dedicated platforms. Chat, direct messages and video hosting are a real improvement on what Patreon offered before and they are not a match for a product built as a community platform, so a membership whose value is the discussion will feel the gap.
There are no structured courses. If what you sell is a curriculum rather than access, the lessons will end up hosted somewhere else, and a second subscription sits on top of the percentage you are already paying.
You do not own the platform or the audience data, which is the quiet cost of the discovery that brought the members in. A fee change decided by Patreon applies to your business, and the August 4, 2025 cutover is the proof that such changes happen.
Customisation and branding are limited. The page looks like Patreon because it is Patreon, and a creator selling a premium membership may want a room that looks like their own.
Payment processing fees are charged per transaction on top of the platform fee and our snapshot does not record the rate. That means the true cost of a thousand small pledges is not a figure this page can give you, and it is a figure you should get off your own statement.

What to check before you build a community on Patreon
There is nothing to trial, because our 10 June 2026 check records no subscription and fees on earnings only. The work is arithmetic rather than a test drive, and all of it should be done against today's terms rather than our four-month-old snapshot.

- Apply your rate to your actual monthly earnings. At the standard 10% rate, $1,000 a month in earnings is $100 a month and $1,200 across a year before processing.
- Pull the payment processing fees off your last Patreon statement. Our snapshot confirms they apply on top of the platform fee without recording the rate, so your own statement is the only source for it.
- Work out your crossover point against a fixed subscription. At 10%, Circle's $89 a month Professional plan, verified 1 October 2026, is matched at $890 a month in earnings.
- Try the chat and direct messages with your most active members for a fortnight. The tools have improved and the question is whether they are enough for your community, not whether they exist.
- Decide whether you would move the memberships as well as the community. A cheaper platform only saves money if the pledges move with it, and Patreon's discovery is part of what you are paying for.

What's the Patreon-Discord integration?
Patreon integrates with Discord to automatically grant patron-only roles in your Discord server based on their tier. Many creators use Patreon for payments and Discord for community. Can I host video on Patreon?

Can I move my community off Patreon later?
You can export your patron list and content, but migrating an active community is difficult. Every patron needs to re-subscribe on a new platform, which means lost members during the transition. Does Patreon offer courses or learning tools?
