What is CTR?
CTR is click-through rate, the share of people who clicked after seeing something, calculated as clicks divided by impressions and usually expressed as a percentage.

The formula and the surface
CTR = (clicks / impressions) x 100, reported as a percentage. The arithmetic never changes but the surface does, and the surface decides what the number means. On YouTube it is impressions click-through rate: the share of times your thumbnail was shown in browse, search or suggested and then clicked. In email it is the share of delivered messages where a recipient clicked a link. On a link-in-bio page it is taps divided by page views. In every case it measures the appeal of the promise, not the quality of what sits behind it.
Reading CTR with retention
CTR on its own rewards overpromising, so read it next to audience retention and the pair tells you what to fix. A video shown 60,000 times that takes 1,800 clicks has a 3% CTR: 1,800 divided by 60,000, times 100. If that same video holds viewers past the halfway mark, the content is fine and the packaging is the constraint, which makes a thumbnail A/B test the cheapest available change. A high CTR with viewers leaving in the first 20 seconds is the opposite diagnosis: the title and thumbnail promised something the video does not deliver, and pushing CTR higher only delivers more of the wrong audience.
Why CTR falls as reach grows
A rate that drops while a video succeeds is normal, not a problem. Early impressions go to subscribers and people who already search your subject; later impressions go to colder audiences who have no prior interest, so the same video shows a lower CTR at 4 million impressions than it did at 40,000. This is also why we publish no target percentage: a figure is only comparable against another figure from the same surface, the same audience temperature and the same thumbnail style. Your own channel median, segmented by traffic source, is the baseline worth tracking.
Where you read it
YouTube Studio reports impressions CTR by traffic source, which is the breakdown that matters, since a browse-feed rate and a search rate are different animals. Third-party tools help with the inputs rather than the figure: vidIQ at $7.50 per month for Pro and TubeBuddy at $4.99 per month for Pro, both checked in June 2026, surface topic competition and thumbnail history alongside your own numbers. For email and link-in-bio clicks the rate lives in the sending or hosting tool, and the creator analytics category covers the cross-platform dashboards. Our creator calculators handle the division if you are working from raw impression counts.
Frequently asked questions
What does CTR stand for on YouTube?
Click-through rate, reported in YouTube Studio as impressions click-through rate. It is the share of times your thumbnail appeared in browse, search or suggested feeds and someone clicked it. Impressions only count feed appearances, so external and playlist traffic sits outside the figure.
What is CTR on TikTok?
In TikTok Ads Manager, CTR is clicks divided by impressions on a paid placement, the same formula as anywhere else. Organic TikTok analytics reports views, watch time and traffic source rather than a click-through rate, because there is no thumbnail click in a full-screen feed.
Is a 7% CTR good for YouTube?
Not a question the number can answer on its own. CTR is comparable only against other CTRs from the same traffic source and a similar audience temperature, and it falls as a video reaches colder viewers. Track your own median by traffic source instead of a universal target.
What is the purpose of CTR as a metric?
It isolates one decision: whether the packaging earned the click. Because it measures the promise rather than the delivery, its value comes from pairing it with retention or conversion. A low CTR points at the thumbnail and title; a high CTR with weak retention points at the video.
