StreamElements review: free overlays, alerts, chat bot and merch (2026)

StreamElements is the cheapest way to put overlays, alerts and a chat bot on a stream, because our check of streamelements.com on 12 June 2026 recorded no paid tier at all. The platform is funded instead by a processing fee on tips, recorded then as approximately 2.9%. That evidence is four months old.

The short answer

Buy StreamElements Use StreamElements if you want overlays, alerts, a chat bot, loyalty points, a tipping page and a merch store without a subscription. Our check of streamelements.com on 12 June 2026 recorded every one of those features on a single free tier at $0, with no paid upgrade on sale.

Skip it if tips are the bulk of your income. The same June 2026 check recorded a processing fee on tips of approximately 2.9%, so the platform takes its share out of what your viewers send. Streamlabs sells an Ultra tier at $27 a month instead, verified 13 June 2026, which is a cost you can budget for in advance.

Where StreamElements fits

StreamElements does the layer that sits on top of your streaming software rather than the streaming itself. Overlays, alert boxes, a chat bot, a loyalty points system, a tipping page and a merch store are the parts it owns, and most people run them alongside OBS Studio rather than instead of it. That division matters, because it is the reason the price looks the way it does.

Our check of streamelements.com on 12 June 2026 recorded one tier and one price: Free at $0, with every feature named above included. There was no paid upgrade to compare it against, which makes this the simplest pricing page in the live streaming software category and the shortest pricing section we publish.

The money comes from somewhere, and on StreamElements it comes out of your earnings. That same June 2026 check recorded a processing fee on tips of approximately 2.9%, plus a margin on merch store orders that the page did not put a number on. The fee figure is approximate because that is how our snapshot records it, so treat 2.9% as the shape of the charge rather than an exact rate.

Running that approximate rate against a round number shows what the trade costs. On the approximately 2.9% recorded in June 2026, $1,000 of tips in a month would carry roughly $29 of processing, and a quiet month with no tips would carry nothing at all. That is the whole bill, and it scales with your success rather than arriving whether you stream or not.

SEStudio is the part that surprises people. It is browser-based streaming, so you can go live without installing anything, which suits a borrowed machine, a locked-down work laptop or a first stream. It is lighter than OBS Studio and does less, so treat it as the on-ramp rather than the destination.

Against the paid alternatives the contrast is stark. OBS Studio is $0, verified 6 October 2026, and is the other free option, but it gives you no alerts or tipping page of its own. Streamlabs was $0 for its desktop app with Ultra at $27 a month on our 13 June 2026 check, and Restream sells multistreaming from $19 a month, verified 1 October 2026, which is the feature StreamElements does not cover.

This pricing evidence dates from 12 June 2026 and is four months old, which deserves saying plainly on a page whose argument rests on a fee percentage. A free tier is unlikely to have sprouted a subscription, but a processing rate is exactly the sort of number a platform adjusts quietly. Read the current terms on streamelements.com before you route donations through it.

StreamElements pricing

StreamElements has one plan. The figures below come from our check of streamelements.com on 12 June 2026 and have not been re-verified since, so confirm the fee before you point your audience at a tipping page.

There is no subscription to size, so what you pay depends entirely on what you earn. Four things set it:

  1. Tip volume, since the processing fee applies to donations taken through the tipping page. Our 12 June 2026 check recorded that fee as approximately 2.9%.
  2. Merch store sales, which carried a platform margin on the same check. The page did not publish a percentage for it, so we cannot give you one.
  3. Nothing else. Overlays, alerts, the chat bot, loyalty points and SEStudio were all on the free tier in June 2026, so adding features does not add cost.
  4. Whether you take tips at all. A streamer who monetises through Twitch subscriptions alone and never uses the tipping page pays StreamElements nothing.

StreamElements pricing against the live streaming tools

StreamElements and OBS Studio at $0, verified 6 October 2026, are the two zero-subscription options here, and they do different jobs well enough that many streamers run both. Streamlabs bundles an equivalent overlay and alert library into Ultra at $27 a month, recorded on 13 June 2026, and StreamYard starts its paid tiers at $44.99 a month on Core, verified 1 October 2026, for guest-led shows rather than gaming overlays. Note that the OBS and StreamYard dates are more recent than StreamElements', so this is not a like-for-like comparison.

StreamElements is completely free. The platform monetizes through a ~2.9% processing fee on tips and a margin on merch store products.

A free tool still has a price, and on StreamElements the price is a share of your donations. If the current fee on streamelements.com differs from the approximately 2.9% we recorded in June 2026, the site is right and this page is out of date. Our creator tool cost calculators will total a streaming stack once you have today's figures.

What StreamElements gives up

Overlay customisation goes less deep than on Streamlabs. The library is large and the one-click installs work, but a streamer with a precise visual identity will hit the edge of what the editor allows and start wishing for the paid alternative.

The tip fee is unavoidable if you use the tipping page, and it is the one cost here. At approximately 2.9% as recorded on 12 June 2026, a channel built on donations hands over roughly $29 for every $1,000 of tips, which is a real number even though the subscription line reads $0.

SEStudio is lighter than OBS Studio because it does less. Scene composition, filters, plugin support and fine audio routing are all thinner in a browser, so anyone producing something more ambitious than a webcam and a game capture will end up installing desktop software anyway.

Mobile is the weakest part. There is no mobile streaming app on a par with Streamlabs', so an IRL streamer or a phone-first creator should look at what Streamlabs ships rather than trying to make the dashboard work on a small screen.

Multistreaming is not included. On the free tier recorded in June 2026 you stream to one destination, and sending the same show to several platforms means paying someone else: Restream was $19 a month on Standard when we checked on 1 October 2026.

Our pricing evidence is from 12 June 2026, which is four months old, and the part most likely to have moved is the fee percentage rather than the free tier. A page that tells you a tool is free owes you the date of that claim, so there it is.

Being free has a quieter cost: you have no commercial relationship, so there is nobody to escalate to when something breaks mid-stream. A paying customer on a subscription platform has a support queue to join, and a free user has a community forum.

How StreamElements compares

The three tools below are the ones weighed against StreamElements, and the axis is what you pay against what you have to assemble yourself. Prices are each vendor's published rates with the date we checked them, and those dates differ, so read them with that in mind. The wider field sits in the live streaming software category.

What to test on StreamElements before you commit your channel

There is no trial to start and no card to enter, so the test is whether the free tier covers your show. Our figures are from 12 June 2026, four months old, so begin by confirming them.

  1. Check the current tipping fee on streamelements.com. We recorded approximately 2.9% in June 2026 and that is the one number on this page you should not take on trust.
  2. Connect the account for the platform you stream on and confirm the events you care about, subscriptions, follows and raids, trigger alerts correctly.
  3. Add an overlay to OBS Studio as a browser source at your stream resolution and watch a test alert land in the preview before you go live with it.
  4. Try SEStudio for one short stream. If the browser handles your scenes, you have skipped a desktop install; if it does not, you have learned that cheaply.
  5. Push the overlay editor at the thing you most want to customise. If you cannot get there, price Streamlabs Ultra at $27 a month, recorded 13 June 2026, against the design time it would save you.
  6. Run the chat bot for a week with your real moderation rules, since commands and timers are where a free bot either holds up or does not.
  7. If you need to reach several platforms at once, price Restream at $19 a month on Standard, verified 1 October 2026, and use the cost calculators to total the stack.

StreamElements questions buyers ask

Is StreamElements completely free?

Yes. StreamElements has no paid subscription tier: all features including overlays, alert boxes, the SE.Live chat bot, loyalty points, tipping page, merch store, and SEStudio browser streaming are free. The platform earns revenue through a processing fee (~2.9%) on tips and a margin on merch store orders.

StreamElements vs Streamlabs: which is better?

StreamElements is better if you want the most features at zero cost. Streamlabs is better if you want deeper overlay customisation, a dedicated mobile streaming app, or multistreaming without a third-party service, and that multistreaming sits behind Streamlabs Ultra, recorded at $27/month on streamlabs.com/pricing on 13 June 2026. For new streamers, the free StreamElements tier covers all the fundamentals, with no paid upgrade recorded on our 12 June 2026 check of streamelements.com.

Does StreamElements work with OBS?

Yes. The most common StreamElements setup is OBS Studio for streaming with StreamElements overlays added via browser source. Copy your StreamElements overlay URL and add it as a browser source in OBS at your stream's resolution (1920x1080). Alerts and chat bot work through the StreamElements dashboard independently of your streaming software.

What is SEStudio?

SEStudio is StreamElements' browser-based streaming software. It runs in Chrome without any download or installation and lets you go live directly from your browser with basic scene management, webcam capture, desktop sharing, and audio controls. It's lighter than OBS but less powerful: ideal for creators who want the simplest possible streaming setup or can't install desktop software.

How does StreamElements make money if it's free?

StreamElements earns revenue two ways: a processing fee (approximately 2.9%) on every tip received through its tipping page, and a margin on merch store orders. These fees only apply when you're earning money through the platform. There are no subscription fees or charges during the months you're building your audience.

Is StreamElements a Nightbot alternative?

Yes. StreamElements' SE.Live chat bot handles the same functions as Nightbot: custom commands, timed messages, keyword moderation, and spam filtering. The main advantage of StreamElements' bot over Nightbot is that it's integrated into the same dashboard as your overlays, alerts, and tipping page: fewer separate tools to manage. Both are free.

Can I use StreamElements for YouTube Live?

Yes. StreamElements works with YouTube Live, Twitch, and Facebook Live. Connect your YouTube channel via OAuth in the StreamElements dashboard. Overlays, alerts, and the chat bot all work on YouTube Live streams. The tipping page and merch store are platform-agnostic.

Does StreamElements have a mobile app?

StreamElements doesn't have a dedicated mobile streaming app comparable to Streamlabs Mobile. You can access the StreamElements dashboard from a mobile browser and use SEStudio in limited mobile configurations, but for serious mobile streaming (IRL streams, mobile gaming), Streamlabs' mobile app is a better choice.

How do I set up StreamElements alerts in OBS?

In StreamElements, go to Overlays, create or select an overlay that includes alert widgets, and copy the overlay URL. In OBS, add a new source in your scene, select Browser Source, paste the URL, and set the width and height to match your stream resolution (typically 1920x1080). Alerts will appear in the OBS preview and in your stream when triggered. Test using the activity feed test buttons in StreamElements.

Does StreamElements work for Twitch affiliates and partners?

Yes. StreamElements works for all Twitch account types: regular, affiliate, and partner. The platform connects via Twitch OAuth and reads your channel events (subscriptions, follows, raids, bits) to trigger alerts regardless of your affiliate or partner status. The tipping page is independent of Twitch's subscription system and works even before affiliate status.
