What is Aspect Ratio?
Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between a frame's width and height, written as two numbers such as 16:9, and it determines how your video fills a given screen.
Updated · Editorial policy
The ratio is independent of resolution: 1920x1080 and 3840x2160 are both 16:9. Vertical formats invert the relationship, so 1080x1920 is 9:16. Publishing in the wrong ratio means the platform either letterboxes your video with bars or crops it, cutting off whatever sat near the edges.
The practical consequence is in framing at the shoot, not in the edit. If you know a horizontal interview will be cut into vertical clips, you keep the speaker centred and leave headroom so a 9:16 crop does not slice off a chin or a graphic. Deciding afterwards usually means accepting bad crops.
| Format | Aspect ratio | Typical pixel dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube long-form | 16:9 | 1920x1080 or 3840x2160 |
| Shorts, Reels, TikTok | 9:16 | 1080x1920 |
| Square feed post | 1:1 | 1080x1080 |
| Instagram portrait feed | 4:5 | 1080x1350 |
A common production setup is to shoot 4K in 16:9 and build the vertical versions by scaling and repositioning inside a 1080x1920 timeline. Shooting at a higher resolution than you deliver gives you room to reframe without softening the image.
Where Aspect Ratio shows up
You will meet Aspect Ratio most often while comparing content repurposing tools - StreamLadder, Pictory, Opus Clip, and Repurpose.io all deal with it, though not in the same way or at the same price.
